Lets Play Sonic The Hedgehog & An Alternative To The Tails Is Dead Theory

Hello Dwellers and Welcome To The Basement...This week's Thursday Long Play attempt is Sonic The Hedgehog, released in 1991 for the Sega MegaDrive / Genesis system.

And I know what you're thinking... wasn't I playing Sonic 4 part 1 last week? Why not take another swing at it or Sonic 4 part 2? Well I figured why not go back in time and see how far I could get, and I made it up to the Labyrinth Zone... and lost my concentration... getting crushed to death twice... in nearly the exact same spot.

Should note that I was playing the game with my new monitor and the display set up is 1280 X 720, which of course is a widescreen format... Sonic The Hedgehog is a game with a native display of 640 X 480.... so it's stretched out to fill the screen, and some would use that an excuse for mistimed jumps, but not me... 'old age' and forgetting where things are is my excuse.

Now during the course of the game play, I started pondering of if the 8-Bit versions of Sonic and Sonic 2 will ever be redone or ported... and yes you read that right, there were Sonic games on the Master System, that weren't exactly like their MegaDrive / Genesis counterparts... in fact Sonic 2 on the Master System, if you don't beat the game with all 7 Chaos Emeralds, Tails dies.... I'm not kidding.

WhoIsThisGit did a video exploring this rather odd ending and the alternate Sonic Timeline, which makes a lot of sense, particularly with the multiple ways 'Sonic 3 & Knuckles' can be played. Playing with Sonic & Tails, continues the MegaDrive / Genesis timeline, and playing with Sonic alone, continues the Master System timeline if you failed to get the good ending...  and Sonic goes through as WITG said, the various stages of grief...

But what about when you play as Tails alone? Yeah no one brings that up... in Sonic 2 for the Genesis, or rather the manual, Tails is the one who comes up with the spin dash, not Sonic, and the player gets the option to play the game as the two-tailed Fox and that extends to Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well... it could be argues that Something happened to Sonic in this alternate time and it's Tails who rises up to take on Eggman and who has the issues with Knuckles.... plus there is this: Mecha Sonic, the first of the two bosses you face in Scrambled Egg Zone in the16-bit Sonic 2... if you're playing as Tails, it could be said that you're facing a robotized Sonic...

That's right, Tails faces his hero who has fallen to Eggman... and much likes WITG's theory of Tails flying a plane for Sonic to start Sonic 3 is just the hedgehog imagining his friend is still with him, Sonic flying the plane up at the end of Sonic 2 to catch Tails as he is plummeting to the earth... in fact we never see how Tails ends up on Angel Island when you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles as him. Could be said that Tails has a miraculous soft landing as he continues his pursuit of Eggman... where Eggman doesn't survive Doomsday Zone

And you know what, this isn't as far-fetch as it seems when one factors in the Game Gear games that follow Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Tails SkyPatrol and Tails Adventures as continuations of this timeline,  both being games where Sonic doesn't appear and having a plot of Tails coming across a problem and dealing with it. Could be argued that after dealing with Eggman and the two antagonists of the Game Gear Games... people just learn not to get out of line when Tails is around.

Of course that is just a theory.
