This Week With The Superheroes: May 13, 2016

Hello and Welcome to the Basement…

It’s Friday so let’s over with This Week With The Superheroes!

And we had some big news this week, so let’s go over a couple of headlines

First off, Supergirl is moving from CBS to the CW… and while this may result in a budget cut for special effects, since production will move from Los Angeles to Vancouver, but as we’ve seen with the production of The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, those over seeing these shows know how to get big value for the dollar.

Speaking of Legends of Tomorrow, Wentworth Miller, who plays Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold, won’t be a regular anymore on the show… but he will be still be under contract so that his character can appear on other shows (like The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, etc). With all these shows on the same network, it really opens up possibilities. I’ll be talking more about this in a few minutes

A year after helping kill The Fantastic Four franchise, Michael B Jordan has signed to take part with The Black Panther. Thankfully he will NOT be replacing Chadwick Boseman who did a top notch job in playing the character in Captain America: Civil War.

So that said, let’s go over this week’s shows.

Gotham: Wrath of the Villains: Unleashed
Plot: Azrael sparks Penguin's need for revenge; Bruce looks to Selina Kyle to help find Professor Strange as he dodges arrest for his experiments.
Rating: 3 out of 5 – This episode again was a case of meh that was saved with the great ending, Butch blowing up Galivan with an bazooka / RPG with rock style music playing was off the charts, Selina finding Firefly and apparently being roasted was a great cliffhanger… but then we had Bruce being a flipping idiot… look, when your Butler if fighting a sword swinging psycho tells you to run.. you RUN and not stand around staring like an idiot. Anyway, we got two more episodes this season

Agents of SHIELD:  Emancipation
Plot: S.H.I.E.L.D. feel like they must be open about their involvement with Inhumans; as the stakes rise, the team is tested in unanticipated ways.
Rating: 4 out of 5 – The usual bits of the pacing being incredibly slow, however this episode did have a point, in using General Talbot being briefed on the Secret Warriors and a lot of misdirection with Lincoln and Lash, who was killed off in saving Daisy… it was surprisingly forward thinking and sets up the season Finale on Tuesday quite nicely. Question is will the season finale be action pack or just be two hours of a lot of cocking about.

The Flash - The Runaway Dinosaur
Plot: Iris volunteers to act as the bait in a plan to trap Girder (Greg Finley) in S.T.A.R. Labs; Barry struggles to go back to his old life.
Rating: 3 out of 5 – I’m being incredibly generous with that score, because all the stuff with Barry having a talk with God, excuse me The Speed Force was seriously moronic and showed why Kevin Smith is overrated as a director. However the stuff with Joe, Iris, Cisco, Henry, and Wells was surprisingly a lot of fun and more of a credit to the cast in making the most of bad direction, even if Wells ended up doing some out of character things. We have two episodes left in his season

Arrow - Monument Point
Plot: Felicity asks her father, Noah Kuttler, for help after the team discovers Damien Darhk's next move; Noah has a talk with Oliver.
Rating: 2 out of 5 – Oh look… an episode about ‘having a double life’ and what it can cost you… as if there aren’t enough of those when it comes to Arrow, and it wasn’t just with Oliver and Felicity, but with Diggle as well… then we have the extremely tired Malcom doing things for Thea plot line… the only positives here was when Felicity and her dad were raiding Palmer Tech. We have two more episodes in the season

Legends of Tomorrow: Destiny
Plot: Rip and Rory become very disturbed from being in the vicinity of the Time Masters; Sara seizes the wave rider; Kendra and Carter reunite.
Rating: 5 out of 5 – This was an awesome episode, from the revelation that the team was doing was under control of the Time Masters to ensure that Vandal Savage rose to power , to Jefferson working with Martin of the past to repair the Jump Ship to return to the team, to the self-sacrifice of Captain Cold… this was great and now we’re heading to the season finale next week and momentum is at an all time high!

And we’ll conclude this week talking about the character of Leonard Snart… and I’m pretty critical when it comes to characters being killed off, and what we got with Snart was a great way for him to ‘go’ at least as it relates to the story being told, he has gone from petty criminal as we saw in The Flash all the way to being a hero, sure it wasn’t his end goal, but he was more than willing to do the right thing. Going back for Rory, who probably had more motivation to what to sacrifice himself out of revenge against The Time Masters, shows how far Leonard came.

Now I’m expecting because of Miller’s new contract, we’re going to see a new Captain Cold, possibly from Earth-2 or from Supergirl’s universe coming into the DC Television Universe in the fall…. Or maybe he’s some how saved from his chosen fate…. Certainly a lot of possibilities… it’s why parallel universes and time travel is awesome… but also incredibly maddening.

And on that note, we’ll wrap things up. If you have any thoughts on things that I covered this week, feel free to share them in the comments section below. Tomorrow is Saturday which is of course the day for Tales From The TARDIS… and we’ll be going over part three of the Keys of Marinus.

Till then, have a good Friday!

NOTE:
It slipped under the radar, but Agent Carter was canceled by ABC… not surprised, only slightly disappointed. Ideally, the best thing would’ve been for Agents of SHIELD to be cut down from 22 episodes to 13 in the fall, and allowing Agent Carter to have a 10 episode run in the spring.
