Hello Dwellers and Welcome to COMICS From The Basement!
What can I say about the character that next month turns 23 years old? He is one of the few non-licensed properties associated with Dark Horse that has enjoyed a nice level of popularity that resulted in two pretty decent movies. Not bad for a franchise that debuted in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 way back in 1993.
The character of Hellboy, despite being a red kick-ass demon, has sorta of the blue collar vibe to him, as in you wouldn’t be surprise to see him hanging out in your local corner bar… if you happen to still have a corner bar in your neighborhood in this day and age.
So let’s get to this week’s comic: Hellboy: Double Feature of Evil, published in 2010 by Dark Horse Comics.
This is a one-shot comic, and as the title suggests it features two stories. The first sees Hellboy recruited to check out at house that forces it’s occupant to bring it people to kill… but you don’t need Admiral Ackbar to tell you that it’s a trap! It’s a nice little story that has a decent build up to an action packed conclusion.
The second story sees Hellboy arriving just in time at a museum to save a woman from a co-worker whose gone around the bend and has access to mystical Egyptian magic… and ends with him losing his head when dealing with a god… and that’s it… there’s nothing more to it, it feels totally tacked on.
Which is a shame because it’s the second story that gets the cover, we see Hellboy punching a mummy while carrying the woman she rescues in the second story. You got this bad ass cover… but a 5 page story. And that’s a bit disappointing, because I feel for something to be called a ‘double feature’, it should have two stories fully fleshed out, and treated equally.
So all cards on the table… what’s the verdict here? Well if you like Hellboy, this comic is a nice one for your collection, but otherwise you’re not missing anything here. You get one decent story, good artwork… it’s not a bad comic, but it’s not worth recommending.
Hellboy Double Feature of Evil is available in the trade collection: Hellboy Volume 11, published in 2011 and that is pretty common to find at all the usual places.
But if you are interested in tracking down a physical copy of the Hellboy: Double Feature of Evil comic itself… well, at the time of this recording, MyComicShop.com does not have it in stock, there a number of copies for sale and for auction over on eBay, including the alternate cover, and there are even fewer available on Amazon. It isn’t available as a single issue on it’s own on Comixology.com either.
Anyway, next week, well… it’s back to the early 90s… with a hero whose origins go back to the golden age!
Till then have a good one!
