Thoughts Regarding Kobe Bryant's Last Game

Just shooting my opinion on Kobe's last game & comparisons to Jordan

TEXT VERSION / SCRIPT NOTES

Hello and Welcome to the Basement...

There are some things about sports that are universal, if a guy remains on a team for his entire career, he becomes a legend for that team, regardless of how good or bad a player he was. Now if he wins championships and other awards, he comes an iconin the sports league he plays in... and then starts being compared to those who proceeded him... and a whole lot of hoopla is then surrounding his 'final season' and 'finale game'....

We've seen this quite a bit recently, in particular with the New York Yankees and the retirements of Derrick Jeter and Mariano Rivera... but the NBA hasn't really had that big 'farewell' tour for any players in recent years.... and thus when Kobe Bryant finally announced his retirement, they got license to print money... or raise ticket prices to get that printed money (I kid... I kid... or do I?)

Anyway, I had the Lakers game on last night, and I find it hilarious that it was buried on ESPN2... so it wasn't good enough to be featured on the 'mother ship'... okay granted the Golden State Warriors were going for their 73rd win in the same time slot, but still with all the hype that was being built up, I'd hate to be the one to see the ratings from last night.

On to the game itself... it was a fine game, meaningless in the grand scheme of things... but then something kept being brought up by commentary, "Kobe's going for 50" and that "Jordan only scored 15 in his final game"... which drew my attention and I noticed that a lot of the shots Kobe took weren't exactly contested with the fierceness one saw in say... the Bulls vs 76ers game last night.

I'm not saying that things were set up to present a perfect story for Kobe to go out on, since Utah had a fairly big league, so I'm saying they indulged those who attended last nights game, letting Kobe ride off into the sunset on a game where he scored 60 points, making it something memorable to watch.

That said... he's still not as good as Michael Jordan in my opinion... factoring in Jordan's two retirements (eliminating 3 seasons), Jordan still has better overall numbers that Kobe. Sure we're comparing Jordan's 15 seasons to Kobe's 20 and some stats like points are going to go to Kobe cause he played longer, but overall on things like points per game rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game and blocks per game... are all in Jordan's favor.

So that said, Jordan is still #1 as far as I'm concerned and Kobe is a very close... but still #2.

Of course that's just my opinion.
